Musicians shine in final concert.

As our end of term festivities gather pace, it was wonderful to see the whole of the Prep School gathered for the Summer Concert on Tuesday evening. Events like these are especially poignant for our Year 8 musicians for whom this will have been their final musical performance at Winterfold.

This year’s Summer Concert was a spectacular affair, and all our musicians must be applauded for their efforts in very warm conditions. During the course of the evening the audience were treated to performances from all the school’s ensembles showcasing the range of talent that exists here at Winterfold. Each musical number was inspired by this year’s theme of Heroes and Villains.

Senior Brass kicked off proceedings with the familiar Pirates of the Caribbean theme, next up Percussion Group took the audience to the dark side with Vader’s March. The Saxophone Ensemble’s rendition of Happy got the audience tapping along. Flute Group’s Super Samba and the Senior String Ensemble’s Palladio added an exotic flavour to the evening.

Moving from instruments to voice the Arbuthnott Hall was soon filled with the dulcet sounds of Senior Choir, Chamber Choir and Festival Choir who sang Sing, Wherever You Are, For Good and Dream On respectively.

The tempo of the evening changed again with The Off Beats taking to the stage. They were quickly followed by the infamous “Groove Diggers” who performed two well-known numbers.

After a brief intermission, the hall erupted into sound once more as the evening reached a deafening crescendo. The School Orchestra launched into See, the Conquering Hero Comes, Doctor Who, Indiana Jones and Super Trouper. The Chamber Choir then played the penultimate song of the Concert delivering a Best of Bond Medley to the delight of the gathered audience. It was wonderful to welcome back a number of Old Winterfolians into the School Orchestra for this occasion.

The showstopping Finale saw pupils singing Something Just Like This together in a Massed Choir. The sound was truly magnificent and burst from the Hall and no doubt carried for miles around.

Well done to all those involved and special thanks must go to Mr Price and our wonderful team of peripatetic music teachers for the time and effort. We wish our outgoing Year 8 musicians the very best for the future.
