Winterfold’s Prep School, for pupils aged 7 to 13, is a vibrant and dynamic environment where children are encouraged to think independently, explore widely, and discover their individual strengths.
From the moment children transition from Pre-Prep into Year 3, we ensure the move is gentle and familiar. With classrooms located nearby and plenty of shared experiences, pupils settle quickly into the rhythm of Prep life.
Our pupils are known for their exemplary behaviour and enthusiastic attitude to learning—qualities regularly recognised by inspectors, visitors, and parents alike. They come to class curious, engaged, and ready to make the most of every opportunity.
A Rich and Rigorous Education
At the heart of the Prep experience is a broad and challenging curriculum, taught by specialist teachers in subjects including English, Maths, Science, Languages, Humanities, Computing, Art, Drama, and Music. From Year 3 onwards, most lessons take place in specialist classrooms, allowing children to deepen their understanding in an inspiring and age-appropriate setting.
Pupils are grouped into mixed-ability forms, with setting for English and Maths to provide appropriate levels of support and stretch. Class sizes remain small, ensuring each child is well known and supported by their Form Tutor, who oversees both academic progress and wellbeing.
As pupils grow, so too does their freedom and responsibility—they learn to manage their time, organise their work, and take pride in their own development.
The School Day
The Prep School day begins with registration at 8.30am, followed by assembly and lessons from 8.50am to 12.40pm, with a morning break at 10.50am. After lunch, afternoon lessons run from 1.50pm to 4.00pm, followed by another short break. The day officially ends at varying times, depending on your child’s age and activities.
At Winterfold, flexibility is key. Pupils can be dropped off from 7.45am and pupils in Years 3 to 8 can stay for supervised prep between 5.00pm and 6.00pm each day.
