On Wednesday afternoon, pupils in Years 3 and 4 embarked on a delicious culinary journey as they took part in a special Spanish Food Day. Combining language, culture and food, the event gave children the opportunity to explore the tastes and traditions of Spain through a series of hands-on activities and authentic dishes.
The afternoon was designed to help pupils develop a greater appreciation of Spanish culture and cuisine, while also encouraging them to engage with the Spanish language in a fun and memorable way. Through preparing and tasting a variety of traditional foods, the children gained a deeper understanding of the ingredients and dishes that are enjoyed across Spain and throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
Three live cooking and preparation stations formed the heart of the experience. Pupils learnt how to make a refreshing non-alcoholic sangria, discovered the techniques behind cooking an authentic Spanish tortilla, and prepared a selection of tapas featuring Manchego cheese, chorizo and marinated olives. The hands-on activities proved hugely popular, with everyone enthusiastically taking part and developing their culinary skills.
The feast continued with a serving of authentic Spanish albóndigas, traditional tapas-style meatballs packed with flavour. To finish, pupils enjoyed freshly fried churros accompanied by a rich chocolate sauce, providing the perfect sweet ending to the afternoon.
The event was a fantastic success, with all pupils embracing the opportunity to try new foods and learn about another culture. It is hoped that the experience will inspire some budding chefs to recreate these dishes at home over the summer and encourage everyone to continue exploring the wonderful diversity of Spanish and Latin American cuisine.
