Learning Beyond the Classroom
At Winterfold, the outdoors is not just a setting — it’s a teacher.
At Winterfold, we believe that some of the most powerful learning experiences happen beyond the classroom walls.
Set in 40 acres of glorious Worcestershire countryside, our school offers children the freedom, space and inspiration to explore, create, move and discover — all while developing essential life skills.
The Winterfold Outdoor Way
Outdoor learning is central to our ethos and forms an important part of the Winterfold Way.
From building dens and investigating pond life to reenacting historical events or solving STEM challenges in the woods, our pupils benefit from rich, hands-on experiences that bring learning to life.
Research shows that outdoor education not only boosts physical and emotional wellbeing but also enhances confidence, teamwork, creativity and resilience — qualities we believe are just as vital as academic success.
A Natural Start in Kindergarten
Our youngest learners in Kindergarten split their time between airy classrooms and our purpose-built outdoor learning centre, Peacock Lodge.
This calm and stimulating space includes access to natural woodland, a pond, a fire pit and an orchard — a rich environment where learning is woven into play and curiosity is nurtured.
Whether they’re exploring mini beasts or making mud pies, children grow in confidence and independence in the great outdoors.

Outdoor Learning in Pre-Prep & Beyond
Outdoor learning doesn’t end with the early years. Children from Reception up enjoy dedicated outdoor learning lessons, while across the whole school, staff make the most of our grounds to enrich the curriculum — from conducting science experiments in the sunshine, to acting out battles in history, or simply enjoying a book under a tree.
Every moment outside the classroom is an opportunity: to engage the senses, stretch the imagination, and deepen learning through experience.
“Children come out of their shells and become more social as they feel less inhibited by the space around them. We take great delight in watching them grow in confidence as they explore, play and learn outside.”
— Mrs Miles, Head of Pre-Prep
