Music at Winterfold

“Music is incredible here. We can join the orchestra, choir or a band – or all three!”
Year 7 Pupil

Music is at the heart of life at Winterfold. From our youngest pupils in Kindergarten to our talented leavers in Year 8, every child is encouraged to discover their musical voice – whether through singing, playing an instrument, performing on stage or being part of an ensemble.

Opportunities for All

With specialist teaching, dedicated rehearsal spaces and the exceptional facilities of our Performing Arts Centre, music is woven into daily school life. All pupils have weekly music lessons and take part in regular performances, including:

  • Choirs – including our award-winning Girls’ Harmony Choir, Chamber Choir and Parent Choir
  • Orchestras & Ensembles – from beginner groups to our acclaimed jazz band, The Groove Diggers
  • Solo Performances – showcased in our Music Competition, Vocal Soirées, Platform Concerts and Mini Me recitals

Over 100 instrumental exams are taken by pupils each year, and many go on to compete in prestigious competitions such as the Dudley Festival and Worcester Young Musicians.

Taking to the Stage

Music at Winterfold is about confidence and creativity. Our pupils regularly perform at renowned venues across the UK and abroad, including:

  • Royal Albert Hall, London
  • Symphony Hall, Birmingham
  • St Peter’s Basilica and The Pantheon, Rome
  • Cathedrals in Worcester, Hereford, and Paris

Recent musical highlights include Bohemian Rhapsody, Les Misérables, Faure’s Requiem and Adiemus by Karl Jenkins.

National Recognition

Our flagship jazz band, The Groove Diggers, has performed at the Upton Jazz Festival, recorded at Metropolis Studios in London, and played internationally in Spain, Czechia and South Africa.

They’ve also won the National Jazz Partnership Award and helped inspire many young musicians to pursue music beyond school.

A Lifelong Love of Music

Winterfold’s inclusive approach means every pupil performs on stage each year – from our Music Makers events to the much-loved Summer Concert. Regular music-themed Coffee Mornings and workshops with visiting musicians provide even more opportunities to listen, learn and be inspired

Broadcasting Our Talent

Thanks to funding from the Friends of Winterfold, our Radio Winterfold studio gives pupils a chance to record, edit and present music and interviews. It’s a unique platform to share our musical talent with the world.
