Winterfold School was alive with music and excitement this week as pupils from Kindergarten to Year 3 took centre stage for the Junior Summer Concert — a joyful celebration of young musical talent, all tied together by an imaginative travel theme. The concert served as a perfect prelude to next week’s Senior Summer Concert, which will continue the globe-trotting theme with performances from older pupils.
From lively Latin rhythms to African melodies and French singalongs, the evening took the audience on a journey across continents, brought to life by the enthusiasm and hard work of Winterfold’s youngest musicians.
The concert opened with a vibrant rendition of La Cucaracha from the Junior Band, directed by Mr C. Sproston. The Junior String Group, led by Ms C. Price and Mrs J. Carey, followed with the atmospheric African Song and the playful We’re On An Aeroplane!
Adding charm and energy, Year 1 and 2 Combined Strings performed a selection of Suzuki pieces and got everyone smiling with the Hokey Cokey. The Junior Percussion Ensemble, under Mr J. Berry, brought the rhythm of South America to Winterfold with Samba Time.
Year 3 Recorders, directed by Ms J. Price, added a touch of cultural flair with Indian Warrior and the classic Old McDonald, while MusicMakers — children from Kindergarten 2 and Reception, led by Mrs J. Richardson — entertained with The Mountain Song, Going to the Zoo, and Icky Sticky.
Language and music combined as Year 1’s Sing-A-Lingo group performed a delightful medley of French songs, including Bonjour, Les Nombres, and Le Rock ‘n’ Roll du Cochon. The choral finale featured the Pre-Prep Choir singing Ai Caramba and Waka Waka, followed by the Junior Choir with Coconut Man and Siyahamba.
The concert culminated with all performers joining in a rousing rendition of The Magic Travel Machine, bringing the global theme to a heartwarming close.
Reflecting on the event, Headmistress Mrs Toms said:
“Today’s performances showcased the incredible grassroots music offering here at Winterfold. It was a delight to witness the enjoyment all of the children showed throughout their performances. Well done to all involved and a special thank you must go to our hardworking music teachers.”
The concert was a wonderful reminder of the creativity, collaboration, and joy that music brings — and an exciting glimpse of the talent to come in next week’s Senior Summer Concert.
