On Tuesday 2nd December, Year 5 took to the stage to present a heartfelt musical adaptation of the much-loved book The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. Their production, titled The Mole, captured the gentle wisdom, quiet humour and emotional depth of Charlie Mackesy’s original story, leaving the audience both inspired and deeply moved.
Leading the cast with confidence and sincerity, Ethan B delivered a standout performance as the Mole, bringing warmth and gentle curiosity to the role. Jonny H portrayed the Boy with impressive maturity, navigating the character’s emotional journey with sensitivity beyond his years. They were joined by Darcy H as the Horse, whose calm presence and expressive delivery grounded the production, and Heidi H as the Fox, who skilfully balanced vulnerability and strength in a beautifully nuanced portrayal.
The entire year group formed a strong and supportive ensemble, demonstrating excellent teamwork throughout. Many pupils stepped forward to take on solo speaking and singing lines for the very first time—an achievement met with enthusiastic applause from the audience. Their confidence grew with each moment on stage, and it was clear how much dedication had gone into preparing for the performance.
What resonated most with those watching was the production’s core message. Through thoughtful dialogue, expressive music and carefully crafted scenes, the cast conveyed the book’s central theme: that kindness is the most important thing of all. At several moments, the audience was visibly moved as characters reminded one another—and all of us—of the value of compassion, friendship and hope.
Year 5 should feel incredibly proud of what they achieved. Their performance was not only a celebration of artistic talent but also a powerful reminder of the impact young voices can have when they share such meaningful messages with confidence and heart.
