Year 4 help common birds by making nest boxes and bird houses in DT

Year 4 have been putting their creative talents to good use this week by making their own bird houses / nest boxes in DT.

This is an ongoing project called “swallows and amazons” where children from Year 3 and 4 have been using Forest School and DT lessons to create items out of natural materials. They have made mobiles, rafts, tepees – all out of twigs, sticks and twine, painted pebbles to look like stone people and now they are making bird houses.

The bird houses have been made from bottle cartons / milk bottles and simple bird feeders from toilet roll holders. The houses have been painted and are due to be finished by making holes in them for the birds to fly in, twigs for perches and decorating them with natural materials.

Year 4 are making their houses from preformed shapes, twigs and branches and are very natural in appearance. They are having to cut their sticks and twigs and glue them all together.

Great work everyone!
