Matty Thacker Shield

Wednesday 22nd January was a special day for Winterfold, as we hosted the Matty Thacker Shield in memory of a Year 6 pupil, who was tragically killed in a car accident in 2008. The tournament has grown in popularity over the years and we had fourteen teams entered for this year’s competition.

It was fantastic to see the enjoyment on the boys’ faces as they threw themselves into the tournament. Both of the Winterfold teams performed very well, with the Colts A winning their Semi-Final on penalties. They then experienced the flip side of sporting emotion when they lost the Cup Final on penalties just fifteen minutes later.

After fifty-one matches were played, RGS the Grange, who had played some excellent football throughout the afternoon, were this year’s Matty Thacker Shield winners.

The last word of the afternoon is from Matty ‘s Mum, Susie, who said “It was a wonderful afternoon. It is so great to see the team spirit and friendship between all the boys and their supporters. It seems to get bigger every year- I truly appreciate all the hard work and the effort of all the staff to make it such a success. Please thank them all on my behalf.  I am always touched by the way everyone remembers and celebrates Matty’s life. It’s difficult to express how it makes me feel; suffice to say I feel loved and comforted by being with you all – still part of the Winterfold family!
