Mathematics is Magic

What a fantastic day the Maths team had at King Edward’s School on Wednesday 23rd January at the Year 4 Maths Challenge. The day began with a warm up activity – handy given the snow that had fallen.  The fabulous mathematicians Zoravar U, Annabel H, Clemmie H and Henry J, got to work straight away, acing the problem in a matter of minutes.

Soon the real challenge began and saw the team of Maths hungry number crunchers go head to head with the other teams, who had come from a variety of schools across the West Midlands to compete. A cross-number puzzle was the first to tax their brains, using a mixture of known number facts, times tables, mental arithmetic and lateral thinking, to achieve success.

Our pupils made a brilliant start, scoring over 80%. Our team had to be physically and mentally fit for the Maths question relay race that followed. Sprinting against other teams against the clock to score as many correct answers as possible, led us onto the podium and secured us a well-deserved third place.

The children then enjoyed a fabulous lunch, followed by a masterclass in logical thinking and using luck in Maths. The day ended with a presentation of some Mathematical Magic by Zoe Griffiths, exploring the more mystical side of Mathematics and proving that Maths really is magic! The children’s behaviour and efforts were impeccable and they were a real credit to us all at Winterfold.
