The Good Shepherd appeal

Lucy Davis from Father Hudson’s Society, the social care agency of the Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham gave a talk in assembly on Tuesday 17th Jan to Prep and Pre-prep pupils about the vital support they give to people in need to improve the quality of their lives.

The assembly marked the start of The Good Shepherd appeal which encourages pupils to think about those less fortunate than themselves and save the money they would normally spend on sweets and treats throughout the month of Lent to donate to the charity.

Each year, during Lent, Father Hudson’s run an appeal to help raise vital money to support their work and invite all Catholic primary schools within the Archdiocese to take part.

Since Father Hudson’s was founded, school children have helped support the charity by collecting coins during Lent, and this remains one of their most important sources of income.

Money raised through the appeal helps sustain the charity’s work with vulnerable people throughout the Archdiocese of Birmingham. This includes:

  • Family Support Service – working with schools to help vulnerable children and their families in Banbury, Birmingham, Oxford and Stoke-on-Trent;
  • Hope Family Project – seeking out and supporting vulnerable families and the wider community in Heath Town, Wolverhampton;
  • Brushstrokes – working with destitute and homeless people in Smethwick;
  • New Routes fostering service – finding loving and supportive foster families for children in care;
  • Adult care services – providing a range of care services to disabled people and those with complex needs or learning disabilities, and to older people and people with dementia;
  • Origins Service – helping people whose lives were touched by adoption through the society to trace their families;
  • Parish Projects – supporting communities to develop their own projects that meet the needs of local people.

The money raised through schools is crucial in helping Father Hudson’s to continue to serve those in need.

Thank you to all those who take part and donate so generously each year.
