Yr 1 set sail with Christopher Columbus

On 8 February, Year 1 pupils were treated to an ‘Explorer Day’ by Discover History.   The children learned about life on board a ship at the time of Christopher Columbus and designed posters to recruit brave sailors to join them on their voyage.  Phoebe was enrolled as the ship’s cook, Layla was the doctor and George was the rat catcher!

A crash course in navigation led to the crew drawing their own maps, and charts were studied closely in order to record speed and direction for the Captain.

Advice books on ports were studied, tide tables consulted and the ship returned home with the hold full of riches!

A great educational journey was had by all!
