Winterfold’s thriving Prep School spans the ages of 7 to 13 years. The transition from Pre-Prep to Prep at 7 is made as seamless as possible. It also helps that the Year 3 classrooms are situated in close proximity to those of the Pre-Prep and children are not really aware of any major change.
The Prep School boasts some outstanding facilities both inside and outside the classroom, including purpose built specialist teaching rooms, a new sports hall, IT suite, heated swimming pool, adventure playground and nearly 40 acres of wonderful grounds in which to play.
As our pupils grow in maturity they have increased freedom and greater responsibility for personal achievement. Specialist teachers oversee a full and challenging programme of study, far exceeding the demands of the National Curriculum. Boys and girls can extend their learning, sharpen their knowledge and practise their skills in a wonderful atmosphere of support and encouragement.
Classes
Classes are small with a low pupil/teacher ratio, so that we can give the children as much individual attention as possible. Each class has a Form Tutor who is responsible for the welfare and academic progress of all the children in their form. Children in Years 7 and 8 are divided into Scholarship and Common Entrance forms but lower down the school forms are mixed ability, with setting for English and Maths. Subjects are taught by specialist teachers, mainly in the form room, although Science, Music, IT, Art and CDT have specialist classrooms and children move for these lessons.
The School Day
The day begins at 8.40am with registration, followed by morning assembly. Lessons begin at 9.00am until 12.40pm, with a break from 11.15 to 11.30am. The afternoon session begins again at 1.40pm and lessons continue until 4.00pm when there is a 15 minute break. The school day ends at varying times according to the age of your child and the day of the week. As always at Winterfold the keyword is flexibility and children may go home at various times between 4.00pm and 6.00pm. Older children normally do their prep in school between 5.00 and 6.00pm and there is after school care for younger children who may need to stay in school until 6.00pm.
